A study was conducted to investigate the effect of pretreatment of sodium bicarbonate solution of different concentration i.e. 8%, 10% and 12% and grain to solution ratio i.e. 16:1, 20:1 and 24:1 on dal recovery of pigeonpea. The milling of pretreated pigeonpea was done on IIPR dal mill. The milling products were fractionated into husk, powder, brokens, fine dal, dehusked grain and unhusked grain. The data were analyzed to find out the best levels of pretreatment for obtaining maximum percentage of finished product and highest hulling efficiency. The finished product percentage varied from 69.66 to 78.10 in different concentration of NaHCO3 treated pigeonpea. The corresponding hulling efficiency ranged from 81.82 to 91.74%. The sodium bicarbonate concentration and grain to solution ratio were most effective for increasing the finished product percentage and hulling efficiency. Both were first increased with increase of grain to solution ratio and then decreased with further increase of grain to solution ratio. The maximum dal recovery (78.10%) and hulling efficiency (91.74%) were obtained at 10% concentration of sodium bicarbonate and 20:1 grain to solution ratio.
