SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of seed globulins of 24 blackgram genotypes displayed the presence of 12 distinctly scoreable polypeptide bands dispersed over four zones, A to D, with Rm values ranging fram 0.05 to 0.821. Five of these polypeptides (Rm: 0.05, 0.128, 0.171, 0.435 and 0.464) varied for their expression. A globulin profile was depicted for the first time based on the electrophoretic banding pattern for this crop. Classificatory analysis led to the identification of the two genptypes, AKU 7 and LBG 402 for their unique protein profiles. The dendrogram constructed revealed, in general, biochemical proximity of the genotypes developed at a particular location and sharing related pedigree. The results generated potentially useful information for future works aiming at elaborated biochemical delineation and their use in improving seed quality in blackgram.
