<fig><caption><p>Professor Chander Parkash Malik</p></caption><graphic xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:href="lsijls-10-2-007-f001.jpg" /></fig><p>The world lost a shining star in Professor C.P. Malik FNA who represented an era of scientists who specialized in many fields. He was a Fellow of the Indian National Science Academy, recipient of the Indira Gandhi Sadbhawana Award (Jaipur National University) and Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Memorial Award (Punjab Agricultural University), and had the extraordinary capacity for investigations in Cytogenetics, Molecular Plant Physiology and Environmental Science, Biotechnology, and Nanotechnology. I have mentioned my observations on Professor C.P. Malik in his Autobiography Living Through Past, Agroacademics, Jodhpur. At Jaipur National University he was instrumental in establishing the life sciences and biotechnology disciplines and this gave us the opportunity for frequent interactions. The Department of Botany greatly benefitted by his presence at Jaipur, especially by his frequent interactions with fellow colleagues and students. He was popular among college students due to his kind social interactions and witty responses. His lectures, “Gene for Jeans” and “Applications of Biotechnology,” were most popular. MSc and PhDs, scholars and students from local colleges attended these lectures which were the source of inspiration for all. The old saying goes, “Nothing grows under the banyan tree,” but not with Professor Malik.</p><p>Professor Malik was singular in his devotion to academics. His autobiography, “Living through past,” recounted his experiences. Shortly before entering the heavenly abode, he asked me to take over the chief editorship of the prestigious publication, International Journal of Life Sciences (Diva Publications, New Delhi) and accept a position of President Society for Promotion of Sciences founded by him which was so kindly confirmed by Professor H.N. Verma VC JNU, Jaipur, an advisor to society. Professor Malik completed his tasks even after suffering through several grave illnesses and he was devoted to the sciences of Botany and Biotechnology until the age of 88 years. Our endeavor to live up to his expectations will be a homage to his memory.</p></sec></body></article></article></body></html>
