Diabetes Mellitus is a disease which is defined as increased blood glucose (sugar) levels than normal. This is additionally called hyperglycemia. A large pharmacological treatment is available for diabetes but have some limitations, like different drug responses among individuals, failure to achieve glycemic control, and adverse effects. Pharmacogenomics is an emerging new branch of science which deals with the relationship between genomic variations for development of effective doses and safe medications according to an individual patient genetic makeup. Two important roles of Pharmacogenomics in precision medicine; one is drug discovery and development and other in selecting the correct drug for patients based on their genetic make-up by avoiding Adverse Drug Reactions, and in maximizing drug efficacy. This review article summarizes the type of diabetes, pharmacogenomics, personalized medicine and role of pharmacogenomics in drug development.
