The first issue of LS-International Journal of Life Sciences for 2023 (January to April) is being released and we are pleased to record publication of two valuable articles dealing with the research of G. Govindjee and of Rajni Govindjee. “Over the past 80 years, the concept of Z-scheme has evolved with the intellectual input of many research groups from all over the world, but for our understanding, highly significant contributions have been made by Govindjee and his co-workers to the modern Z-scheme as we see it today in every publication around the World”. A detailed article by Mohapatra et al. (this issue) deals wonderfully well with this. Govindjee is one of the major architects for the conceptual evolution of the Z-scheme of photosynthesis; this article highlights his contributions to the overall field of photosynthesis education. Rajni Govindjee, a leading photobiologist of our time, as she turns 88 in 2022, is an equally great scientist and a wonderful human being. I have personally witnessed her hospitality while visiting the Govindjees in 2008. Her running to help a woman who had a stroke indicated her compassion. An article on Rajni Govindjee by Balashov et al. (this issue) on her 88^th birthday is a tribute to her contribution to science. She not only proved that the Emerson Enhancement Effect was not in respiration, but in photosynthesis, but more importantly, she has made crucial key discoveries in how precisely halobacteria convert light energy into chemical energy.

Anshu and Kumar (this issue) present how to improve the yield of biofuel plant and obtain valuable hydrocarbons. CRISPR/Cas9: An Evolutionary Approach Towards Crops Amelioration, an article by Jyoti et al. (this issue) highlights the future of genome editing. The article highlights dimensions of CRISPR/Cas9 for the improvement of crops to gain resiliency by tackling biotic and abiotic stresses and modulating appearance, palatability, and nutritional components.

I thank Ms. Reema Bagga and her team for their wonderful work on this excellent issue. We also thank Govindjee for supporting our journal with his valuable articles and guiding us from time to time.
