Abstract

A survey was done to evaluate farmers’ status of four villages of South 24 Parganas district of Sunderbans. For this purpose, 50 numbers of farmers were selected random basis from each village. According to the survey result, it was found that most of the farmers in coastal areas of Sundarbans prefer to keep small numbers (0 to 5) of goats. Most of the farmers follow different types of feeding for their animals such as grazing, supplementation and cultivated fodder. Regarding shelter of the animal, most of the animals were kept in owners’ house or attached with owners’ house. Farmers of the study areas are more or less aware about cleanliness, regular vaccination and deworming. Farmers have capability of heat detection as well as breeding of the animals. Most of the farmers rear goat as per the availability of feed resources. The overall farming status was found moderate to good as per the survey findings.
