Abstract

Sclerotic granules are tiny, round, hard sclenrchymatous structures, occur intermixed with seeds in the pericarp of fruits of berries in several angiospermous families, especially, Solanaceae. It has long been used for taxonomic purpose by several Solanologists. Although these are known for over 100 years, remarkably, little is known why do they occur, what role they play in reducing seed out put in a species and their role in dispersal? This paper reviews the earlier works as well as the current developmental and molecular aspects are also discussed.
