Column chromatography is the most widely accepted analytical technique to separate sample mixture. A large part of successful analysis depends on analytical method development and basic step of column selection. Many columns are available at market but analyst use them with hit and trail which unnecessarily enhance the down time of project and wastages of resources. This review article is based on many published articles and a comprehensive study to help analyst to understand key points for column selection based on scientific fact and its stationary phases. We will also discuss how separations can be further controlled and optimized considering sensitivity, retention and elution pattern of analyte.
