Abstract

Treatment of different concentrations of whisky and country wine for different time periods showed positive cytotoxic effects on Allium cepa root meristem. Effects included inhibition of mitotic index and induction of chromosomal aberrations like clumping, stickiness, early separation, laggard, bridge, fragment, deform chromosome, exclusion, disturbed polarity, bi- and -multinucleated cells, micronuclei, nuclear budding etc. Such cytotoxic effects warrant consumption of wine for health benefits.
