3Prof Yash Pal Abrol was bom in Lahore (now in Pakistan) on 23 December 1935. He was educated at Punjab University (B.Sc), Banaras Hindu University (M.Sc) and the University of Chicago (Ph.D). He carried out Postdoctoral research at the University of California with Prof. Eric Conn, the well-known biochemist. Prof. Abrol carried out pioneering work on the pathways of biosynthesis of cyanogenic glycosides. He joined Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI) in 1965 and contributed extensively on plant nitrogen metabolism throughout his career. His name had been synonymous with nitrogen dynamics in crops. He served as ICAR National Fellow (1978-1984), Head of the Division of Plant Physiology (1988-1995), at IARI. He was Visiting Scientist, McMaster University, Hamilton, Canada (1983-1985); Consultant, FAO (1971, 1993); Emeritus Scientist (CSIR) 1996-2000; INSA Senior Scientist 2001-2005; INSA Honorary Scientist (2006-2020) and Member, International Nitrogen Initiative Advisory Committee (2009-2020. He was also President, Indian Nitrogen Group and Society for Conservation of Nature (SCON).
