Abstract

The study aims to investigate appropriateness of strategic development issues within the UK higher education sector, with specific examples occurring during 1992–2002. It aims to look into how higher education environment will impact on universities, their missions and institutional positioning. This research investigates importance accorded to various strategic objectives as advocated in available literature. The analysis stage is intended to involve higher education institutions internal and external environments. Strategic change in higher education institutions is analyzed from several perspectives with priority focusing on teaching and research, funding issues, institutional structures, within the backdrop of changing attitudes. In this paper, nature of strategic issues are identified and change management in higher education sector are investigated. The paper examines major changes in higher education environment, which impact government policies special interest groups and nature of policies that emerge, and their continuity. To understand how universities operate and pursue their different goals and missions, it is imperative to identify strategic factors that contribute to their success.
