Abstract

Television promoted thin female form is over-represented with possible harmful consequences on adolescent girls, who do not see themselves as complying with the stereotype of acceptable feminine beauty. However, when television begins to construct this message around a particular strand of beauty and attractiveness, it normalises these images that cause serious concerns for girls who accept these images as a norm. Repeated viewing of these thin images on television could increase body image concerns among adolescent girls. This study adopted survey method. A sample of 300 adolescent girls were analysed which revealed that girls who spend more time viewing television show more body image concerns due to television promoted thin images
