Instagram, a popular social media platform, has evolved beyond personal photo-sharing to become a significant space for cultural expression and communication. With over a billion active users, Instagram provides a powerful medium for individuals, communities, and organizations to share and celebrate their cultural identity. Instagram has rapidly become a dominant social media platform for cultural expression, enabling users to communicate their cultural identities through visual media, such as photos, videos, and stories.
A comprehensive literature review has been conducted to understand the intersection of culture and social media, providing a theoretical framework for the analysis. To collect quantitative data, the survey method was adopted by a structured online questionnaire addressed to 200 Instagram users. Results were of high engagement on cultural content on the platform and show why it is so important for cultural expression and preservation.
Findings about what users prefer and see outline the possibility that the platform may encourage cultural understanding while the challenges represent representation and authenticity in the digital sphere.
This research explores how Instagram functions as a medium for cultural communication, focusing on how different communities—use the platform to share their cultural narratives. Through visual storytelling, hashtags, and influencer marketing, Instagram allows cultures to be celebrated, reclaimed, and communicated on a global scale. However, issues such as cultural appropriation, misrepresentation, and the digital divide persist.
