Abstract

This study seeks answers to how Artificial Intelligence (Al) is embedded in the newsroom and compares India and global media ecologies between 2018 and 2024.

Through a secondary data collection phase and thematic analysis, a picture is developed of how AT technologies have been adopted in journalistic practice, editorial and publishing workflows, and in entering content into the newsroom processes. Case studies have taken input from news media organisations such as The Washington Post, the BBC, and Xinhua news agency and compared with news organisations such as The Times of India, India Today, and ABP news. The results indicate that overall, global media organisations have structured Al adoption with ethical codes of conduct and automation, while Indian media newsrooms are still in exploratory stages, with implementations developed and transformed across the organisation as a patchwork - while have not understood the ethical dimensions of using Al in newsrooms across divisions given the lack of stated policies on Al in the media.

The study concludes that there is an urgent and demonstrated need and case for ethical A framework and policy frameworks in India to be at the same level of maturity and sophistication as global peers not, learn from later implementation strategies not, lead ethically, and use misinformation as a tactic using Al for media transformation.

Al themes were broken down into technology adoption and integration, ethics in process and Al policy, editorial changes adopting processes, and the effect of Al in obtaining audience trust and managing audience behaviour.
