As Live India's sting turns out to be a sham, this paper revisits the legal aspects of sting operations and the government's views on such operations. The issue of citizens' right to privacy came to the fore again in the wake of publication/broadcast of casting couch story of Shakti Kapoor and Aman Verma soliciting sex from a journalist posing as an aspiring actress. These cases raised a point the violation of citizen's right to privacy. All of them seem to be on a slippery wicket as the right is not explicitly guaranteed by the Indian constitution. The paper focuses on the tricks of trade, previous sting operations, issue of right to privacy, requirement of new law for right to privacy, new content of code for media. This paper attempts to examine the privacy interests and public interests involved in sting operations.
