Purpose: In today’s digital world, Fear of Missing Out or FOMO has become a common feeling, especially among young people. It’s that anxious thought that everyone else is having more fun or living a better life, mostly triggered by what we see on social media. This study looks at how FOMO is impacting the mental health of youth aged between 16 to 28 in Lucknow, focusing on how it connects with stress, anxiety, and depression.
Design/methodology/approach: To understand this better, researcher used both survey and interview method. Around 100 students from universities in Lucknow filled out a questionnaire about their social media habits, how often they feel FOMO, and how it affects their mood and mental well-being. We also spoke in detail with some of them to hear their personal stories and learn how they deal with these feelings.
Findings: The study found a clear link betweenfrequent FOMO and higher levels of anxiety and depression. But it also showed that some young people are finding ways to cope like taking breaks from social media or spending more time in face-to-face conversations.
Originality/value: The research shows that FOMO isn’t just a buzzword it’s a real issue affecting mental health. It also points to the need for better awareness and support to help youth build a healthier relationship with social media.
