Residence at childhood as a determinant of the readership of Yoruba newspapers

Abstract

The paper seeks to find out if childhood environment determines whether one reads indigenous language newspapers or not. Survey research method was adopted for the study. The study population was made of civil servants in the Oyo State Government Secretariat, Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria. From this population, a sample of 450 respondents was taken. The sampling procedure adopted was systematic sampling. The instrument for the study was a self-administered questionnaire. From the analysis of the data gathered, it was observed that majority of the respondents who had their childhood in the low-density areas of the city do not read Yoruba newspapers.
