Abstract

Exclusive breastfeeding ranks as the best and the cheapest infant feeding option. In spite of the numerous associated benefits the practice has been surprisingly low even in developing countries. This study is therefore an exploration of awareness of exclusive breastfeeding in an emerging mega city like Lagos. The researchers made use of the survey method and tried to balance responses to a 20 item questionnaire with qualitative data obtained through sessions with 4 focus groups. Respondents to the questionnaire as well as participants in the FGD sessions were purposively selected based on the fact that they are nursing babies who are below 24 months at the point the study was conducted after Lagos had been stratified along rural and urban set up. Two main statistical methods were used. The simple frequency count and percent age and chi-square were used for the quantitative data. Qualitative data for the study were analysed using the constantcomparison method. It was discovered that there is high level of awareness of exclusive breastfeeding among nursing mothers in both rural and urban areas of Lagos. The researchers further discovered that there is a significant level of difference in the level of awareness among first time nursing mothers and mothers nursing second and subsequent babies.
