Abstract

Web publishing, digital archives, digital video, electronic conferencing, blogging, wikis, podcasting, real simple syndication feeds, on-line gaming, virtual reality worlds are the potential new tools for teaching and learning English. Many scholars have evidently highlighted the significant use of Internet in the promotion of communicative skills of the individual. In this powerful learning environment all learners and faculties have their own personal laptops and other mobile tools such as iPods and PDAs which transform teaching and learning experiences into something unimaginable. Teachers of English as a medium of communication in India strive to a great extent to find appropriate instruction methodology to support the students in acquiring the communication skills. This study intended to assess the popularity of English language portals among the university students of Tamil Nadu; India. The acquired data through administered questionnaire among the students of the higher education institutions in Tamil Nadu have evidently proved the very low access of the online portals for the improvement of English language skills.
