Content analysis of science & technology coverage in Indian newspapers

Abstract

Science communication has become essential for development and prosperity of any nation. In a country like India where superstitions still prevail and hinder all the efforts of development, science illiteracy cannot be ignored. People can be made scientifically aware, by informing, educating and explaining them about science and technology. Media have a great potential to disseminate scientific information and enhance scientific literacy. Numerous research studies in this field concludes that Indian media is not giving substantial information on science and technology. The present study focuses on the coverage of science and technology in national newspapers of India in terms of space allocation, its comparison in Hindi and English newspapers, and the formats being used in disseminating scientific information. It also finds out the preferences in dealing with the subjects by newspapers that is the subjects on which newspapers present more information and the sources of information whether Indian or foreign. The research methodology used is content analysis. The results indicate that science gets very little space in newspapers and English newspapers cover science more prominently than Hindi newspapers. It was also found the health is most preferred topic in Indian print media.
