Lalla Ded, the 14th century poetess of Kashmir in India was an excellent communicator. In line with the linear model of communication, her message followed a pattern which is considered as the basic tenet of any effective communication. Through her Vakhs (verse-sayings) in Kashmiri language, she tried to communicate the social reality of her times. Besides, her language has been a resource for creating a powerful voice that communicates the medieval mysticism. However, lack of extensive research on her life, has swathed her in legend and myths. To reconstruct her image in the light of authentic fact and looking at her as a poet who gave voice to women becomes mandatory before venturing into any kind of intellectual or literary debate about figures like Lalla Ded who have been the victims of misinterpretation and misrepresentation. And then, putting her in contemporary settings will also not only revise her status as a communicator but will place her message in a different context.
