Abstract

Emerging markets have found good coverage in various management literatures over the past couple of years. But during the financial crisis of 2007–09, the world has witnessed the true potential of these markets. While the developed nations were reeling under the heat of the financial break down, emerging markets were the only exception to some extent. China and India even grew during the same time period.

These countries are characterised by growing economy, a willingness to develop the country in a sustainable manner and a growing number of educated people. On the other hand, they lack the infrastructure that is available in most of the developed countries and bureaucracy is an integral part of the business environment in most of these countries. Still, they are continuously trying to overcome these hurdles and present a ray of hope to the world. They are the future avenues of growth for many of the big organizations, which are able to foresee the future.

This paper provides a basic understanding of the emerging countries and why they are important for the global economy, with special emphasis on BRIC. Lots of examples given in this paper throw light on the steps taken by different companies to tap the emerging countries in a fruitful way. Finally, a brief working formula is given for the companies which want to start business in emerging markets.
