Abstract

Poisoning is more prevalent in developing countries like India than developed countries. With increasing urbanization and rapid socioeconomic development in India during the last two decades, significant change in paediatric poisoning profile and outcome has been seen and the main objective of this prospective study is therefore to find out the newer trends of poisoning under 18 years of age

This retrospective study consisted of 60 medico legal autopsies performed on poisoned victims in the Department of Forensic Medicine, Dharmapuri Medical College during the period of 4 years (2012–2015). Data of children (< 18 years) presenting with poisoning were collected. 60 cases from February 2012-July 2015 were admitted and brought to forensic medicine department.

Accidental poisonings are observed to more common in all the age group; though there is an increasing incidence of suicidal cases among adolescent age group

The present study shows that the highest number of patients belonged to the age group of 13 to 18 years. In our study, it is also found out that accidental poisonings are common in age group 0–5 years. Pesticide is the most common poisoning.
