This paper presents the various aspects of medico-legal injuries sustained by the older people in a rural area. Our study will prove to be beneficial in comprehensive geriatric assessment in this region
All medico legal cases amongst the elderly (>65yrs) in RIMS&R were studied retrospectively for a period of one year. We segregated the cases according to age, sex, and the type of medico legal presentation.
The distribution of Medico-legal cases among elderly males was 60% and in females 40%. Majority of the cases among elderly males were of RTAs (28%), whereas in elderly females majority of the cases were of fall (21.6%). In our study the mean age of injury was 70.9 years. Maximum cases were seen in May and October (12.8%), while January showed the lowest incidence (4%) of Medico-Legal Cases.
There should be multifactorial intervention to prevent falls in the elderly and incorporate measures like exercise training, rational medication, correcting visual impairment through cataract extraction, home safety and road safety education, and treatment of associated diseases
