Phytoplasma diseases pose a significant threat to the palms worldwide, affecting over 50 palm species across the continents. The rise in reports of palm phytoplasma diseases from various regions and the expanding host range of existing phytoplasmas affecting new palm species is a major concern. Significant advancements have been made in the molecular characterization and diagnostics of palm phytoplasmas. There is an urgent need for multi-faceted strategies to protect farmers from the risks and contain the spread of the disease in new outbreak areas. The development of affordable, sensitive, and reliable on-farm diagnostic kits, identification of insect vectors, and breeding programs aimed at developing disease resistant varieties are essential to mitigate the risks for farmers.
