Remembering stories across boundaries: Crossing ‘the visible invisible’ borders in Geetanjali shree’s novel Ret samadhi/tomb of sand

Geetanjali Shree’s Hindi novel Ret Samadhi (2018), translated as Tomb of Sand (2022) in English by Daisy Rockwell, is the first book from any Indian language that has made it to the International Booker Prize 2022 for translated books. The article will explore how the book, in its own border- crossing from Hindi to English and earlier in French has become accessible from within its contexts to the world at large. Next to it, there will be a focus on the most (in)visible boundaries that create psychological impact on an octogenarian woman, Chandraprabha Devi, introduced as Ma at the outset of the novel. The article shall also examine how the Partition-politics of the Indian subcontinent serve as a precise linguistic matrix to understand the word border, which serves as Ma’s metaverse, where she equally enjoys access to and slipping across two sides of the border within the contextual frame of the novel. Border-crossing as a theme becomes more relevant in the book, for the author desires that the novel should accomplish its journey in terms of transcendence of all ‘the visible invisible’ borders and boundaries.
