Abstract

This essay discusses the relationship between Modernism and Postmodernism. Observing whether Postmodernism is a break from Modernism, or if in fact it is a logical outcome of Modernism. I will start by trying to define what Modernism is, the certain philosophical aspects and the main event, the Enlightenment. I will be drawing upon Kant and Harbermas, in the hope that they can shed some light upon the philosophical era. Second, I will try to understand and find some sort of definition for Postmodernism, focusing mainly on the works of Jean François Lyotard. Finally, I will combine the key features of Modernism and Postmodernism together to see how they compare and contrast, commenting on how they ‘fit together’.
