Abstract

If you are human, you will smash your chain to stand tall. Smash the chains with your hands; these hands are yours ….

Jhumur, the protagonist of the path-breaking novel, SHODH, by Taslima Nasrin is exemplary of the above words. She is a woman, a daughter, a girlfriend, a wife, a daughter-in-law and a mother amidst an entire farrago of other relations. But the most prominent role played by her is the ‘upstairs bou’ (daughterin-law).
