This essay discusses Thomas Gray's “Hymn to Adversity” and William Wordsworth's “Ode to Duty”. Initially, it describes the main poetic trends of “The age of transition” and “The romantic age”. Second, there is an attempt to critically study the above-mentioned works and throw light on the impact of the circumstances of Gray and Wordsworth on their poems. Finally, all the key features are combined to understand the elements that make them worth studying together, that in turn, immortalise the philosophy of Adversity and Duty.
