Assistant Professor, Department of English, Shri Shiv Chhatrapati College, Junnar-410502, Maharashtra, India

Abstract

The psychoanalysis of Goldmund shows his encounter with the different layers of the psyche. The contents of Goldmund’s unconscious come out through dreams, visions, and his art of drawing and woodcarving. Narcissus helps him to probe into his unconscious. Goldmund’s encounter with the first layer of the unconscious, the shadow, comes in the form of violence and two murders he commits. If his life is examined, it seems that he takes a longer time to integrate his shadow. Goldmund shows the courage of facing his shadow in the form of violence. This integration of shadow brings psychological development in Goldmund by making him determined soul in his quest.
