Abstract

In this study, polyvinyl alcohol/chitosan/gum acacia film matrix was prepared by solvent casting method and characterised for biomedical application. Physicochemical characters analysed by fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscope and mechanical strength results indicated good molecular interaction between poly (vinyl alcohol), chitosan and gum acacia and tensile strength of film increased with gum acacia upto 27.24 MPa. Surface morphology was changed in presence of gum acacia and showed heterogeneous and homogenous structure in lower and higher concentration. Enhanced stability of water uptake and decreased rate of biodegradation was performed under water and PBS (Phosphate Buffer Saline) media, respectively. Our results indicated that the addition of gum acacia increased the stability of prepared film matrix, which might be tailored for biomedical application such as drug delivery and tissue engineering applications.
