The role of curcumin in perspectives of oral-healthcare

Abstract

Curcumin is a polyphenol component extracted from the plant Curcuma longa. There is significant interest on curcumin because it has been used for the treatment of extensive diversity of diseases. This article provides a review of the effect of curcumin on oral health care. Curcumin has some significant properties including anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antioxidant, immunostimulant, anticancer, and antimutagenic activities. As a result of these effects, it is reasonably beneficial in dentistry and oral health. It can treat oral disorders such as periodontitis, gingivitis, oral mucositis, candidiasis, aphthous ulcer, as well as oral cancers. Moreover, curcumin can be used in dental plaque detection, as a mouthwash, and as a pit and fissure sealant.
