Abstract

Elicitation offers the opportunity to enhance the antioxidant properties and phenolic content of medicinal plants. The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of elicitors such as proline, salicylic acid and a Plant Growth Promoting Rhizobacteria (PGPR)-Azospirillum on the antioxidant potential of Eclipta alba, a plant with potent medicinal properties. The antioxidant potential determined by ferric reducing antioxidant power assay (FRAP) and 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay showed several fold increase in elicitor treated plants as compared to control. Significant increase in DPPH free radical scavenging activity at 17.05% and FRAP values of 1068.36 AAE/gm dry weight was found in salicylic acid treated plants. In addition, the total phenolic content (TPC) was also enhanced indicating the efficacy of these elicitors to enhance the antioxidant potential of E. alba.
