Rumex hastatus is a traditional medicinal plant which is part of ayurvedic and Unani system herbal systems and has high medicinal properties used to cure rheumatism, skin diseases, lungs infection, asthma, cough, jaundice, headache, diarrhea, dysentery, fever and body weakness. The aim of this study to evaluate the phytoconstituents, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial activities of methanolic extract obtained from R. hastatus roots and leaves. Methanolic extracts of R. hastatus roots and leaves extracts were subjected to phytochemical analysis both qualitative and quantitative and assayed for antioxidant and anti- inflammation activities. Antibacterial activity was also determined against Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhi, the two bacteria responsible for gut diseases, and antifungal activity were analysed through well diffusion assay against fungi Paecilomyces notatum and Paecilomyces variotii. In case of antiradical activity against DPPH, nitric oxide, and super oxide again methanolic root extract showed higher scavanging activity than methanolic leaves extract having IC50 value 39.84, 45.22 and 54.69 µg mL−1. In case of anti-inflammation activity, methanolic root extract showed great potential than methanolic leaf extract in preventing protein denaturation having IC50 value 64.10 µg mL−1. Antibacterial and antifungal zone of inhibition of 11.3 mm for E. coli and 13.1 mm for S. typhi and creating zone of inhibition of 12.0 mm for P notatum and 13.2 mm for P variotti was observed. It can be concluded that the plant possesses broad spectrum of antibacterial and antioxidant action.
