Abstract

Many species of genus Diospyros have been tested and evaluated for their antibacterial activities. Plant extracts, isolated phytoconstituents, essential oils as well as phytosynthesized metal nanoparticles prepared by using the plant extracts showed considerable antibacterial potential efficacy. Various antimicrobial assays applied with plant extracts and products from Diospyros species revealed their significant minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) and zone of inhibition (ZOI) values against pathogenic bacterial strains. The different species of this genus exhibited prominent growth inhibition activities against drug-sensitive and multi-drug resistant strains of several bacteria strains. The present review aims to discuss updated information regarding drug discovery and antibacterial efficacy of these plants towards the pathogenic bacterial species.
