Abstract

Minerals have a major role in metabolism and function of the cell. The mineral compositions of plants depend on species or variety, growing conditions such as soil type and geographical location. Many trace elements play significant roles in the formation of active constituents of medicinal plants which are attributed to curative properties. Also, some of these are essential for different metabolism in human body which are closely related to growth and health in general. Medicinal plants are source of raw materials for both traditional and modern medicine. Total mineral content in medicinal plants would be helpful to get a realistic data of human intake of these minerals as their balance is essential for maintaining a good health. Despite the extensive use of medicinal plants and role of minerals in human metabolisms, there is insufficient information on elemental concentration in Indian medicinal plants. The concentration of minerals in medicinal plants beyond permissible limit is a matter of great concern. World Health Organization regulates the maximum tolerable limits of minerals. Medicinal herbs get contaminated during growth and post-harvest management. Different medicinal plants contain major, minor and trace minerals in various proportions. The purpose of this review is to collate information about content of essential minerals in most frequently used medicinal plants in India, which could have individual as well as societal consequences.
