In the present study, alcoholic extracts of Ruta graveolens L. leaves were examined for anthelmintic activity against Indian earthworms (Pheretima posthuma) as model. Among the extracts, methanolic extract was found to be more effective one (paralysis and death time was 3.31±0.07 and 7.04±0.15 min respectively) at a concentration of 30mg/ml. Piperazine citrate (control) was used as standard drug (20mg/ml) in the present study. The Phytochemical analysis of both the extracts showed the presence of phenolic compounds (flavonoids and tannins), which may the active compounds. The present study confirms that the alcoholic leaf extract of the test plant can be used as an anthelmintic drug.
