Heavy metals entry may interfere with the physiological functioning of the human system and may alter female reproduction through direct or indirect mechanisms. The herbal preparations used for remediating the damaged reproductive function is composed of a mixture of 17 plant products that are powdered, mixed and normally given to women who are in the family way and parturition. The mixture is given to fortify the reproductive system and restore the hormonal activity in women, who has delivered a baby. Two different doses of cadmium (50 ppm and 200 ppm) were given to Wistar rats aged 45 and 65 days. An herbal extract derived from 17 plants was administered orally every day at a dose level of 200mg/kg of body weight to the rats exposed to cadmium. The hormones involved in reproductive system in the ovary, including LH, FSH, Estradiol, Testosterone and Progesterone which were associated with delayed puberty, Estrous cyclicity were measured in the control, cadmium-exposed rats without treatment and in the cadmium-exposed rats treated with herbal extract. The reduction in LH, FSH, Estradiol, Testosterone and Progesterone activity after cadmium exposure improved significantly in the rats treated with the herbal extract (p<0.05). The decrease of hormones due to cadmium exposure was reversed significantly with herbal extract administration. The synergistic effect of each bioactive compound in different herbal extracts requires further study.
