Phytochemistry and medicinal values of Glue berry(Cordia dichotoma G. Forst)

Abstract

This review highlights pharmaceutical profile of Cordia dichotoma G. Forst which is an important edible medicinal plant, belonging to family Boraginaceae. In this paper the phytochemistry, general medicinal uses and pharmacological activities of various parts of the plant have been reviewed. The plant is rich in diverse phytochemicals including flavonoids, glycosides, alkaloids, terpenes and sterols, carbohydrates and proteins. Cordia dichotoma seeds possess α-amyrins, betulin, octacosanol, lupeol, β-sitosterol, taxifolin-3’, 5-dirhamnoside and hesperitin-7-rhamnoside. The pharmacological properties of C. dichotoma include anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant activity, wound healing, anti-helminthic, antiulcer, anticancer. Other health benefits are also discussed. The seed kernels of Cordia dichotoma contain high proportion of fatty oils and proteins having potential as cattle feed.
