Abstract

The changes in leaf number and leaf area responsible for differences in yield potential studied in blackgram. There was a linear increase in number of leaves, leaf area and leaf area index from sowing to 60 DAS. The rate of increase in leaf are accelerated with time 30 to 50 DAS. The growth rate of leaf number, leaf area and LAI was rapid between 30 to 50 DAS and was less afterwards due to pod development. It declined toward harvesting due to defoliation of older leaes. Leaf area ratio was declined towards maturity. The leaf area duration was increased rapidly from 20–30 DAS to 50–60 DAS and rate was rather slow towards harvesting. The genotype AKU-7, TAU-1 and pant U-30 recorded highest grain yield. Among these, AKU-7 exhibited comparatively better performance for leaf contributing parameters. The genotypes, UTC-55 and PDU-7 were found to better for grain yield as they bears good performance leaf number, leaf area, LAI, LAR and LAD.
