Genotypic and phenotypic variability in Indian mustard

Abstract

Genetic variability was studied for 12 characters in 19 genotypes of Indian mustard (Brassicajuncea (L) czern & coss.). Estimate for phenotypic and genotypic coefficient of variation were used for the characters numbers of primary and secondary branches, 1000-seed weight, number of siliquae per plant and yield per plant, which indicated the presence of considerable amount of variation. Heritability and genetic advance were high for 1000seed weight, number of siliquae per plant and plant height. Number of siliquae per plant and plant height had moderately high heritability with high genetic advance indicating that additive gene effects were important for these characters and selection pressure could be applied on them for yield improvement. Number of primary branches per plant and oil content had low heritability indicating that these traits were under the influence of environmental factors.
