An experiment comprising 11 entries including two checks, i.e. HUW 234 and NW 1014 was conducted in Randomized Block Design with four replications during Rabi 2002–03 and 2003–04. The observations were recorded on productive tillers mete {2, number of grains spike-1, 1000-grain weight (g) and grain yield q ha−1. The grain yield was higher in NW 2036, DBW 14 and HD 2768 in both the years under surface seeding. Productive tillers mete {2 in HD 2790, grain number spike-1 in RW 3535 and 1000-grain weight in K 9107 and HD 2768 were found better as compared to rest of the entries.
