India receives second highest rainfall in the world, which replenishes our rivers, the water bodies, biosphere clusters, biodiversity nests both on land through plants as aquatic life and microorganisms in alluvial river beds. India's large population, flora and fauna survive, because of presence and continuity of these resource, the protective and productivity cycles of which are conducive to sustaining the strengths of present environments.. River Ganga is revered, is a cultural symbol and strength of India as a nation; is also a river of faith for salvation for several people and saver of life for India's millions. Ganga river waters are preserved in households for years, without losing purity, and are used on special occasions as part of prayers. Millions visit the river congregations for bathing, every year. The increasing needs for waste water disposals on land and in water, in tributaries as well as in main river, without treatment or without an eye on ecology and biodiversity, will lead us to hydrocide. The paper discusses the past studies and action programmes on Ganga, highlights the need for concurrent care on conservation of its biodiversity and river ecology, and in all its reaches.
