Adhwara group of river originates from foot hills of Nepal. This basin is traversed by a network of rivers viz. Adhwara, Jamura, Darbhanga-Bagmati etc. Due to flat topography, these rivers cause widespread submergence during monsoon. But due to deficient irrigation, full potential of this fertile land cannot be realized. Design and Research wing of CWC was entrusted to devise suitable diversion structure for this area. After careful consideration of various factors e.g. flat topography, small land holding, flood embankments etc, the diversion structures were designed by building upon indigenous water diversion practices and structures to suit local conditions. Various design issues addressed are recounted here so that experience gained here can be gainfully utilized to plan for diversion structures where similar situations exist.
