The Krishna Bhima sub basin area experienced flashy floods in year 2005 and 2006 which caused heavy damages to the lives and properties in the basins. Therefore, under World Bank Aided HP-II project, Government of Maharashtra developed Real Time Stream flow Forecasting (RTSF) and Reservoir Operation System (ROS) with Real Time Data Acquisition System (RTDAS) for better management of flood.
Total 249 Real time Hydro meteorological data collection stations are installed which transmit real time data to data center established at Sinchan Bhavan Pune. This real time data is used in the modeling system through Data assimilation module which applies real time corrections to the simulated water level and discharges.
The RTSF & ROS Modeling system developed in the project consists of, a Hydrological model (NAM model) for generating runoff from a number of catchments schematized in two sub basins. A Hydrodynamic model MIKE 11 for routing flows through the river and reservoir system to compute flows, water levels. The short term flood forecasting model for computing stream flow and flood forecast for period of 3 days from the time of forecast. A user interface integrating the above models for forecasts, providing reservoir operation guidance, scenarios management and flood warning and dissemination.
The Real Time Stream flow forecast for viewing/use of all stakeholders of the basin is made available on website; http://www.rtsfros.com/mahakrishna in Real time Forecast menu. In Monsoon season Real Time data of various rain gauges located in catchment area of dam is available to Reservoir managers immediately on web site. RTSF & ROS model gives 3 days forecast of rainfall, Reservoir water level, Inflow & Outflow, this helps dam management authority to take optimum decision regarding storage and releases from reservoirs. During flood situation, using the offline scenario generation facility available in the simulation model any type of scenario can be generated before actual release of water from dam to know the probable flood levels on the downstream side of River. The developed system is to be in use from 2013 monsoon season and is very helpful for reservoir operation and flood management of Krishna and Bhima basin.
