This study was carried out in Tehsil Uri for collection of need based information to prepare Strategic Research Extension Plan (SREP) in light of on-going reforms in extension system using various (PRA) Participatory Rural Appraisal Techniques and Methods. The results after analysis of three representative villages namely Isham, Limber and Noorkah revealed that three distinct agro-eco- situations such as sub-tropical, temperate and sub-temperate do exist in Uri. Most of the farmers turned to be small or marginal, with an average family size of 5–8 members, illiterate, and resource poor, growing maize crop for food and fodder purposes. Temperate agro-eco situation is the most populous, practising monoculture farming without much improvement, sub-tropical situations suitable for olive and lemon fruit cultivation. Sub-temperate area appeared better than the remaining two situations and well suited for double cropping, diversification and commercialization in fruit cultivation etc. Thus, introduction of situation specific technologies or interventions and agro-vocational programmes for the well being of farming community of the tehsil are highly needed.
