Abstract

Geographic Information System (GIS) is very useful for climate change impact studies, and to develop mitigation and adaptation strategies and policies. For this purpose web-accessible Portal is an important requirement in sharing of up-to-date geo-spatial data. Primary goal of such a geo-database is to effectively manage data and related metadata so as to facilitate their delivery to the end-users through a web-user interface called a Portal. A climate Portal provides access to a wide range of data and information through provision of interoperable geographic information services that allow a user to browse and download geo-spatial data made available by a host of associated organizations. Development of a geodatabase interfaced through a Portal is considered as an important requirement in sharing and exchange of geo-spatial data for different aspects of climate change. Working as a data clearinghouse, the climate Portal acts as a gateway to a network of geo-spatial data repositories. It also acts as a single window gateway to an extensive nletadata catalog to help discover available data on climate change.

Climate change studies require access to a wide variety of geo-spatial data. In. view of the utility of a web-accessible geo-database in climate change studies, the Uttarakhand Centre on Clinlate Change of the Kumaun University, has launched the initiative since May 2010 to develop a climate Portal for the Uttarakhand state to share data for climate change studies among different stakeholders. The present paper reports the current status of the climate change Portal of the Uttarakhand State.
