Induced Chlorophyll Mutations and Mutagenic Effectiveness in Indian Mustard (B Rassica Juncea L. Czern & Coss)

Abstract

Two varieties of Indian mustard viz. Krishna and Kranti were treated with different concentration of EMS for different durations. Eleven different types of chlorophyll mutants viz. albina, xantha, viridis, tigrina, maculata, variegated, albo–xantha, xantho-alba, xantho- viridis, virido- xantha and virido-alba were isolated with different doses of EMS. Treatment with 0.4%EMS for 16 h produced the highest percentage of chlorophyll mutations in both the varieties. Where as the effectiveness of treatment was highest with 0.4% EMS 8h treatment in both the varieties. Results from chlorophyll mutations suggest that longer duration of treatment with higher conc. of EMS is not suitable to generate mutagenic variability.
