Evaluation of different crops in rice fallows in coastal Orissa

The rice productivity in Orissa is only 1.3 tonnes per ha and the cropping intensity is 156 percent (1995-96). The cropping intensity needs to be increased to assure a god income to the farmer through additional crops that can be grown in residual soil moisture or with minimum irrigation in post-monsoon season. The yield potential of different post kharif rice crops like varieties of Groundnut (ICGS 44), Rajmash (PDR 14), Mustard (Pusa bold), Mungbean (Sam rat), Chickpea (BG 256), Cowpea (Lobia 450) and Linseed (Laxmi-27) which were grown with residual soil moisture or with life-sav~ng one or two light supplemental irrigation could assure a good return to the farmer of coastal belt of Orissa in terms of their yield per hectare and net return.
