Multitier cropping, also known as multistoried or layered cropping, is an innovative agricultural practice that optimizes vertical space by growing multiple horticultural crops at different heights on the same land. This system leverages the complementary light, water, and nutrient needs of various crops to enhance resource efficiency and productivity. Key advantages include increased biodiversity, improved soil health, and diversified income streams for farmers. However, the system poses challenges such as complex management requirements, higher initial investments, and intricate pest and disease control. Despite these challenges, multitier cropping offers a sustainable and economically viable approach to horticulture, particularly in regions with limited land resources. Its potential to maximize output from a given area while promoting ecological balance makes it an attractive strategy for modern sustainable agriculture.
